Testing microscopically derived descriptions of nuclear collectivity: Coulomb excitation of Mg-22
2018
Many-body nuclear theory utilizing microscopic or chiral potentials has developed to the point that collectivity might be dealt with in an {\it ab initio} framework without the use of effective charges; for example with the proper evolution of operators, or alternatively, through the use of an appropriate and manageable subset of particle-hole excitations. We present a precise determination of $E2$ strength in $^{22}$Mg and its mirror $^{22}$Ne by Coulomb excitation, allowing for rigorous comparisons with theory. No-core symplectic shell-model calculations were performed and agree with the new $B(E2)$ values while in-medium similarity-renormalization-group calculations consistently underpre…

The REX-ISOLDE project
1998
Abstract REX-ISOLDE [1] is an experiment at ISOLDE/CERN with a twofold aim: (i) to demonstrate a novel efficient scheme for the acceleration of radioactive ions from the online mass separator ISOLDE to energies around the Coulomb barrier. (ii) to perform first nuclear physics experiments by studying the structure of the neutron-rich (N = 20, N = 28) nuclei by Coulomb excitation and neutron transfer reactions. An overview on the different components of the radioactive beam accelerator is given with special emphasis on the separation possibilities and ion number capabilities of the system.
Charged kaon femtoscopic correlations inppcollisions ats=7 TeV
2013
Correlations of two charged identical kaons (KchKch) are measured in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). One-dimensional (KKch)-K-ch correlation functions are constructed in three multiplicity and four transverse momentum ranges. The (KKch)-K-ch femtoscopic source parameters R and lambda are extracted. The (KKch)-K-ch correlations show a slight increase of femtoscopic radii with increasing multiplicity and a slight decrease of radii with increasing transverse momentum. These trends are similar to the ones observed for pi pi and K-s(0) K-s(0) correlations in pp and heavy-ion collisions. However at high multiplicities, there is an indica…
Collectivity in the light radon nuclei measured directly via Coulomb excitation
2015
Background: Shape coexistence in heavy nuclei poses a strong challenge to state-of-the-art nuclear models, where several competing shape minima are found close to the ground state. A classic region for investigating this phenomenon is in the region around Z=82 and the neutron midshell at N=104. Purpose: Evidence for shape coexistence has been inferred from α-decay measurements, laser spectroscopy, and in-beam measurements. While the latter allow the pattern of excited states and rotational band structures to be mapped out, a detailed understanding of shape coexistence can only come from measurements of electromagnetic matrix elements. Method: Secondary, radioactive ion beams of Rn202 and Rn…

Decay characteristics of 0 2 + and 0 3 + states in112Cd and114Cd
1980
Absolute rates ofE0 andE2 transitions depopulating 0 2 + and 0 3 + states in112Cd and114Cd have been determined using conversion-electron andγ-ray spectroscopy, and double Coulomb excitation. The collectivity of these states is established and discussed.
Development of a new Recoil Distance Technique using Coulomb Excitation in Inverse Kinematics
2009
We report on an experiment using Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics in combination with the plunger technique for measuring lifetimes of excited states of the projectiles. Aside from the investigation of E(5) features in 128Xe, the aim was to explore the special features of such experiments which are also suited to be used with radioactive beams. The measurement was performed at the JYFL with the Koln coincidence plunger device and the JUROGAM spectrometer using a 128Xe beam impinging on a natFe target at a beam energy of 525 MeV. Recoils were detected by means of 32 solar cells placed at extreme forward angles. Particle‐gated γ‐singles and γγ‐coincidences were measured at different t…
X-ray production with heavy post-accelerated radioactive-ion beams in the lead region of interest for Coulomb-excitation measurements
2015
Abstract Characteristic K X-rays have been observed in Coulomb-excitation experiments with heavy radioactive-ion beams in the lead region (Z = 82), produced at the REX-ISOLDE facility, and were used to identify the decay of strongly converted transitions as well as monopole 0 2 + → 0 1 + transitions. Different targets were used, and the X-rays were detected by the Miniball γ-ray spectrometer surrounding the target position. A stable mercury isotope, as well as neutron-deficient mercury, lead, polonium, and radon isotopes were studied, and a detailed description of the analysis using the radioactive 182,184,186,188Hg isotopes is presented. Apart from strongly converted transitions originatin…
